🌰 Chestnut Ready-to-Fruit Mushroom Kit Guide
Chestnut mushrooms (Pholiota adiposa) are an absolute showstopper! Extremely popular with chefs and commercial growers for their incredible, rich flavor and satisfying crunch, these choice edible and medicinal mushrooms produce stunning orange caps covered in unique white and dark brown scales.
Please note: Chestnuts are a Top-Fruiting Advanced Kit. Because they require a bit more dialled-in environmental control, we recommend this kit for growers who have moved past the novice stage!
🛠️ Getting Started: The First Flush Chestnut mushrooms are top-fruiters, meaning they grow straight up! Depending on your setup, you have two ways to fruit them:
Option 1: The Teacup Cut (Great for single kits)
-
Step 1: Cut the Bag – Cut a teacup-sized hole in the side of the plastic bag.
-
Step 2: Fold & Position – Fold the excess plastic bag tightly underneath the substrate block and place it into a terrarium so that the teacup-sized hole is facing directly upwards.
-
Step 3: Keep it Humid – Mist the inside walls of your terrarium 1 to 3 times per day to keep humidity high.
Option 2: The Ultimate Monotub Grow (For massive yields!) Want the ultimate Chestnuts harvest? Grab 2 to 3 kits and build a monotub or 2!
-
Step 1: Prep the Tub – Take a 60L-100L plastic storage tub and line the bottom with a black garbage bag. Ensure the black plastic comes up the sides a bit (this is crucial to prevent the mushrooms from side-pinning and getting squished against the tub walls).
-
Step 2: Break & Level – Open your 2-3 substrate blocks, completely break them up into loose material, and pour them directly into your tub on top of the black plastic. Lightly pat the substrate down until it is flat and even.
-
Step 3: Incubation – Pop the lid on and incubate the tub at 18-20°C until you see little mushroom pins starting to form on the surface.
-
Step 4: Fruiting & Airflow – Mushrooms need to breathe, so either leave the tub lid slightly ajar for fresh air exchange, or make it a professional setup by drilling holes and using our Stick-on Monotub Filters: 👉 https://aussiemushroomsupplies.com.au/product/stick-on-filter-for-monotubs-and-fruting-chambers-65mm-3um-1-sheet-of-3/
Option 3: The “In-Bag” Method (No terrarium needed)
-
Step 1: Clean the Bag – Open the bag and wipe the inside plastic clean with a damp paper towel to remove any loose sawdust (otherwise, it will get stuck all over your growing mushrooms!).
-
Step 2: Inflate & Peg – “Inflate” the bag to create a nice open pocket of air for the mushrooms to grow into. Fold the top of the bag over and use a peg or clip to keep it tightly shut.
-
Step 3: Let it Breathe – Keep the bag pegged shut! The built-in filter patch will allow the block to breathe while naturally creating its own perfect, humid microclimate inside the bag.
-
Step 4: Minimal Misting – Because the bag is closed, it traps moisture perfectly. You only need to mist very lightly maybe 1 or 2 times a week. Crucial tip: Do not over-spray! Adding too much water into the sealed bag will cause bacterial issues.
🌤️ Ideal Growing Environment
-
Temperature: Chestnuts prefer a nice, medium climate. They need stable temperatures ranging from 15-18°C to trigger fruiting perfectly.
-
Light: Mushrooms need enough natural, indirect light to know which way to grow. Don’t lock them in a dark cupboard!
🍄 Tips & Troubleshooting
-
Texture Check: Don’t panic if the caps feel a bit moist or tacky! In nature, Pholiota adiposa is known for being slightly slimy/scaly when wet. This is completely normal and part of their unique charm.
-
Patience is Key: Chestnuts can take a little longer to develop than fast-moving oysters. Maintain those 15-18°C temperatures and let them do their thing.
🔪 Harvesting
-
When to pick: The best time to harvest is right before the caps flatten out completely and drop their spores. The veil under the cap should be just breaking.
-
How to pick: If using the bag method, unpeg and open the bag. Harvest the entire bunch at once by grabbing the cluster near the base and gently twisting/pulling it away from the block in one piece.
-
Clean up: Make sure you remove all smaller leftover bits of mushroom flesh from the block so nothing is left behind to spoil.
♻️ Preparing for Later Flushes
-
Rest Period: After your first harvest, let the block rest for 2 to 3 weeks. If you are using the in-bag method, simply peg the bag shut again and let it sit!
-
Rehydrating: If your block feels really light after that first flush and rest period, it needs a good drink.
-
Remove the block from the box/bag.
-
Submerge the block in cold water for 5-12 hours to rehydrate it.
-
The next day, gently drain off any excess standing water completely.
-
Put the block back into your fruiting setup and resume your light misting routine!
