Golden Enoki Ready-to-Fruit Mushroom Kit Guide
Golden Enokis (Flammulina velutipes) are a choice edible mushroom that absolutely loves the cold! Perfect for a winter grow, these stunning mushrooms develop beautiful golden caps and firm, velvety stems that taper from gold to dark brown when grown outdoors or with plenty of fresh air.
Please note: Due to the strict low-temperature requirements and extra care needed, we recommend this kit for advanced growers who have moved on from the novice stage. if out of stock please allow 2-4 weeks for shipping. They should only be grown in winter or if you have a good cool spot under 15°C.
🛠️ Getting Started: The First Flush Golden Enokis are top-fruiting mushrooms, meaning they grow straight up from the top of the block rather than out the side!
-
Step 1: Prep the Bag – Open the top of your kit box. Instead of cutting an “X” in the side, cut the top of the plastic bag straight across. Leave a few inches of plastic wall extending above the substrate block—this creates a little collar that helps pool humidity and encourages the mushrooms to grow straight up.
-
Step 2: Create a Terrarium – Enokis require very high humidity. Place a loose plastic bag (with a few holes poked in it for air) over the top of the kit to act as a humidity tent, or place the entire block inside a simple fruiting terrarium/tub.
-
Step 3: Keep it Humid – Mist (give it a light spritz) 1 to 3 times per day with filtered or cooled boiled water. Crucial tip: Only spray the inside walls of your humidity tent or terrarium; don’t spray the mushroom block or the mushroom caps directly!
🌤️ Ideal Growing Environment
-
Temperature: This mushroom likes it cold! They need temperatures to range from 5-14°C to trigger fruiting. (We have even had kits successfully fruit inside a fridge at ~3°C!).
-
Light & Air: If grown under low light and high CO2, they will grow into the elongated, delicate white stems you see in grocery stores. To get the gorgeous, firm golden caps, ensure they have plenty of fresh air exchange and natural, indirect sunlight.
-
Humidity: Keep it very high, ideally over 80%. A humidity tent or terrarium setup is an absolute must for this variety.
🍄 Tips & Troubleshooting
-
Stalled growth? If your mushrooms suddenly stop growing, your environment likely got too warm or too dry. Make sure they are kept in the chilliest, most humid part of your home or outside during the peak of winter.
-
Watch the watering: Once your pins start forming into recognisable mushrooms, ensure you are only misting the environment around them. Direct water on the caps can cause bacterial blotch if you overspray.
🔪 Harvesting
-
When to pick: The best time to harvest is when the golden caps have opened up but before they flatten out completely and drop their spores.
-
How to pick: Harvesting is super easy! Just grab the entire canopy/cluster with both hands and gently peel it right off the top of the block in one big piece.
-
Clean up: Make sure you remove all smaller leftover bits of mushroom flesh from the top of the block so nothing is left behind to spoil.
♻️ Preparing for Later Flushes
-
Rest Period: After your first harvest, let the block rest for 2 to 3 weeks before you start heavily misting your humidity tent again. Later flushes always take a little longer to come through!
-
Rehydrating: If your block feels really light after that first flush and rest period, it needs a good drink.
-
Remove the block from the box.
-
Submerge the block in cold water for 5-12 hours to rehydrate it.
-
The next day, gently drain off any excess standing water.
-
Put the bag back into your terrarium setup and resume misting!
