🔴 Australian Native Reishi Mushroom Spawn Guide (Ganoderma steyaertanum)
Ready to step up your mushroom growing game? This is a truly special one! Our Australian Native Reishi (Ganoderma steyaertanum) is a direct clone of a wild Ganoderma endemic to Australia, originating from North QLD, Australia. The original culture came from our good friends at Forest Fungi in Tasmania!
While the striking, deep yellow and red woody fruitbodies are completely unpalatable and too tough to eat, when prepared correctly (via hot water teas or dual-extraction) they contain incredible functional medicinal properties.
Please note: Due to the extra skill and extreme patience required, this is considered a more advanced mushroom to grow. We highly recommend this strain for cultivators who have moved on from the novice stage! It is very slow to fruit, but absolutely worth the wait.
🌾 Recommended Substrates To build those dense, woody, beautiful red conks, this wood-loving medicinal strain requires a high-nutrient diet! We highly recommend:
-
Master’s Mix (a 50/50 blend of hardwood sawdust and soy hull pellets)
-
Hardwood sawdust heavily supplemented with nutrients (like oat bran, wheat bran, or soybean meal) at a rate of 10% to 30%.
🛠️ How to Prepare Your Substrate & Inoculate Because Reishi thrives on highly nutritious supplemented substrates, standard hot-water pasteurization is not enough. You will need to treat this like an advanced grow!
-
Hydration: Before processing, ensure your bulk substrate mixture is thoroughly wetted to a 60% moisture level.
-
Sterilization is Key: Your supplemented substrate blocks should be fully sterilized in a pressure cooker at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours, or “super pasteurized” by steaming them at atmospheric pressure for 10 to 12 hours.
-
Clean Inoculation: Because you are mixing your spawn into fully sterilized material, you must be extremely clean! Always inoculate your cooled blocks in front of a laminar flow hood or inside a Still Air Box (SAB) wiped down with 70% isopropyl alcohol. (Check out our YouTube videos for visual guides on managing ready-to-grow advanced kits!)
🧫 Incubation (Colonizing Your Block) Once you have cleanly mixed your spawn into your prepared, sterile substrate and sealed your bags, it is time to let the mycelium take over!
-
Temperature: Store your inoculated bags in a clean, dark space with stable temperatures between 16-20°C.
-
Fresh Air: The growing mycelium needs to breathe! Ensure your incubation room has good ventilation, aiming for ideally one room air change per hour.
-
The Golden Rule—Extreme Patience!: Reishi mycelium is thick, tough, and often forms a dense white/yellowish skin over the block. It is a very slow grower and takes a long time to fully consolidate and begin forming primordia. Set it and forget it!
🌤️ Best Fruiting Environment Reishi is incredibly unique because you can control its shape using fresh air! You can top-fruit it by cutting the bag open, or let it grow right inside the bag.
-
Temperature: Once fully consolidated, this native strain thrives in a medium-low temperature range of 15-23°C.
-
Light: Place your fully white block somewhere with enough natural, indirect light to read a book by. It needs light to develop those stunning deep yellow and red colors!
-
Humidity: Keep it high (80-90%+). If you are growing “conks” outside the bag, misting the area frequently is crucial so the growing edge doesn’t dry out.
-
Fresh Air (Choose your shape!): * For “Antlers”: If you leave the block sealed inside the bag with just the filter patch for air, the high CO2 will cause the Reishi to stretch upwards, forming long, branching, finger-like “antlers.”
-
For “Conks” (Caps): If you expose the block to high fresh air (6-8+ room air changes per hour), those antlers will flatten out and form beautiful, traditional kidney-shaped caps (conks).
-
🍄 Tips & Harvesting
-
Inoculation Rate: Because you are mixing your spawn into fully sterilized material in a highly clean environment, you only need an inoculation rate of 3% to 5% by weight. Your 1.7kg spawn bag goes a very long way!
-
Research & Medicine: This strain is primarily grown for medicinal usage, compounds, and research rather than culinary cooking.
-
When to pick: Reishi mushrooms grow from the outer rim. The growing edge will be a soft, bright white, fading into yellow, and then deep red/brown at the base. The mushroom is ready to harvest when that white growing margin disappears and the entire fruitbody turns hard and deep red! You will usually need a serrated knife or pruners to cut it off the block.
