🍄 Pocket Oyster Mushroom Spawn Guide (Pleurotus geesterani)
Ready to build your own mushroom blocks from scratch? The Pocket Oyster (Pleurotus geesterani) is a fantastic and incredibly rewarding variety to grow. First described by mycologist Rolf Singer in 1962, this adorable, “pocket-sized” oyster has gained massive popularity in China (where it’s known as 秀珍菇, xiùzhēn gū) for its intensely delicious, savory umami flavor.
If you are looking for a reliable producer that yields beautiful, tasty, bite-sized clusters, this spawn is the perfect choice!
🌾 Recommended Substrates Pocket Oysters are aggressive growers and not picky eaters! You can successfully inoculate:
-
Straw or Sugarcane Mulch
-
Hardwood sawdust or wood pellets
-
Paper pellets or cardboard
-
Agricultural wastes (corn cobs, cotton wastes, coffee grounds, leaves, and sunflower husks/stalks)
🛠️ How to Prepare Your Substrate (Video Guides) To use this spawn, you will need to pasteurise your chosen substrate first to give the mushroom mycelium a head start over any competing molds. Because Pocket Oysters are robust, you can use any of these easy methods! Check out our step-by-step video tutorials for the best ways to prep your bulk substrate:

🧫 Incubation (Colonizing Your Block) Once you have mixed your spawn into your prepared substrate and sealed your bags, it is time to let the mycelium take over!
-
Temperature: Store your inoculated bags in a clean, dark space with stable temperatures between 16-20°C.
-
Fresh Air: The growing mycelium needs to breathe! Ensure your incubation room has good ventilation, aiming for ideally one room air change per hour.
-
The Goal: Leave the bags to incubate until the substrate turns completely white with mycelium. Once fully colonized, it is ready to fruit!
🌤️ Best Fruiting Environment
-
Temperature: Pocket Oysters are very forgiving and love a mild climate! Once fully colonized and ready to fruit, aim for a stable temperature range between 15-24°C.
-
Light: Place your fully white block somewhere with enough natural, indirect light to read a book by.
-
Humidity: When you cut your fruiting holes, keep the humidity high (70-80%+) by misting the area around the cuts 1 to 3 times a day.
-
Fresh Air: Mushrooms “exhale” CO2 as they grow! To ensure you get beautiful clusters, you need excellent fresh air exchange. Aim for 6-8+ room air changes per hour in your fruiting space.
🍄 Tips & Harvesting
-
Inoculation Rate: We generally recommend mixing your spawn into your prepared bulk substrate at a rate of 10% to 20% by weight. The more spawn you use, the faster it colonizes!
-
Bite-Sized Beauties: Don’t wait for them to get as massive as a King or Monster Blue oyster! True to their name, these caps stay relatively small and “pocket-sized,” making them perfect for tossing whole into stir-fries and soups.
-
When to pick: Harvest the entire cluster at once when the edges of the tiny caps are still slightly curled downwards. As soon as they start pointing up and flattening out, they are about to drop spores.
